My folks came down today for dinner to celebrate my B-day. I logged on here and was showing dad around YTmag. He turned 75 last month.

We scanned the article on the front page about "Grampa's M" and I told dad I wish he hadn't sold the JD520 or the JD530. Mom, too, said that she wished we still had one of those because they were handy little tractors with a scykle bar mower or side delivery rake.

Dad said his first tractor was a brand new '47 JD-A but shortly after he decided he needed a second tractor. He bought a used '39 JD-A that later got sold to buy a new JD-B. The first (new) A was traded to the dealer for a new JD-60 and is long gone, but he said the guy that bought his '39 "A" still had it, sitting in the weeds behind his barn.

I asked if he thought the old boy would sell it back to him. He said as far as he knew "Jake" never sold ANYTHING he ever bought! But would Jake sell the old "A" back to him? Possibly so!

He's going to talk to Jake, and see what they can work out. If all goes well, I may end up with the 2nd "A" my dad started farming with over 50 years ago when he married my mom. Keep your fingers crossed for me guys, I'm hoping real hard on this one! Gadget

Got Grandpa's '35 B in the garage. He actually bought it in '71, but he and Dad had a '35A as their first tractor. Dad went on to become a noted 2 Cyl. mechanic after farming. Wish he were still around to help me with the restoration. I will pass this one on to my sons. Makes it all worth while knowing it was in the family.

I have my Great Grandfathers '45 B and my Grandpa's '52 50. These are my family "heirlooms" and will be passed on to my kids. I find that collectors in general are good people, and I think it's because they tend to care for relationships like they care for the old iron. I hope that my kids can appreciate this as much as I do.
