I'm thinking about buying a tractor to compete in tractor pulls this summer . I've narrowed it down to a JD 830 or an Oliver Super 99. I grew up with a Super 99 and I think they are good tractors, but I've never used an 830. I'm wondering what are the good and bad points of the 830 compared to the Super99. Thanks in advance.

we have had a 99 and the hp is easy to get to 130 and cheaper than a 830 plus the resale is about twice as good as a nice 99 will bring 14000 plus where the parts for the jd will be ridiculous and the tractor might bring 6500-7500

Check what the weights are. I think the 830 might be a lot heavier.

The Super99 weighs 10,155 pounds with 78 horses, and the 830 weighs 8,729 pounds with 72 horses. I think John Deere's are good tractors and I own a couple of them but for your best bet I would get that Oliver. The reason I say this is because around where I am Olivers seem to do better at tractor pulls and I have pulled my super 88 and have beaten many a 720.

I am a John Deere man through and through, but the Super 99 with the GM diesel will drag an 830 all over the place. There is one that pulls near us, he has a diesel 99 it will pull in 3rd gear what the 830 is lucky to do in first. He ended up getting the tractor banned from the pull because there was no competion.
