730 D crank shaft end play

I looked at a 730 D that a guy has for sale, and although it looks pretty good i think there is a problem with the crank, the flywheel cover was off and when you push the clutch ahead the crank moves about a half an inch or so, what do you think? He says it runs good but the battery was down so we couldn't start it.

Sounds like the thrust washer"s ( could be one on the inside) are both gone. Depending on serial no. and what has been put in there could be three diferent thrust washer setups. Check your part book and serial no. But do make sure that flywheel is tight. If memory serves me should have 300 ft. lbs. Don

If you buy this tractor, pull the flywheel to be sure the thrust washer is there and good. When I bought my 730D, there was about 0.25" of crank end play. When I went to set the stock flywheel, it was stuck to the point that I ruined a 7 ton puller. After getting the flywheel off and cleaned up, I found that there was no thrust washer, just a broken piece left at the bottom.

But, the 0.50" endplay you mentioned sounds like the flywheel has moved out. As previously stated, if the splines are bad, your best bet is a taperlock or pass on the tractor.

The 70's, 720's, and 730's are notorious for flywheel-crankshaft problems. Most use what they call a taper-loc flywheel to prevent endplay from slippage.

Kemper I've heard a lot of stories concerning 70,720,730 Diesels flywheels coming loose and damaging the crank splines and flywheel,Dengler Tractor in Middletown,Ohio sell taper lock flywheels I think they run 6-800 dollars I've never dealt with this problem but If I were you I would check that flywheel real close,sounds like it's due a taper lock flywheel.post back and tell us what you find. later Gman

If theres a half inch end play you're going to buy more than a flywheel. The oil slinger will be worn out they run about $300. Unless you're getting a heck of a good deal on it I would pass, I traded some stuff for a 730D that I wish I'd never seen, this one had been totally abused, but I just had to have it. Being very familiar with two cyl. diesels I checked the crank and all the common wear points,but this one didn't wear out in the normal places, the clutch end of the crank was worn out along with the rest of the tractor. The problem with the money pits are that you get so much money into them you can't stop throwing more at them because you've got so much in them and when you're done you ask yourself why did I do that? Also one other thing, what causes the flywheels to come loose is idling to slow, these engines should never run at less than 700 rpm.
