47B three point hitch won't lift

I changed the oil in my 47B's hydraulics and three point hitch and everything worked great - for a while. But then the three point hitch won't lift and appears to be low in hydraulic oil. If I top it up it works for about a month and then stops lifting again. There's no fluid on the barn floor so I think there may be a leak from the green box below the rear light, (where the hydraulic hoses plug in) into the main rear chamber as that seems to be getting more full! Am I right? Is it an easy job to take the green box off the back and replace a seal or whatever the oil is getting past? It looks like this might be simple but I've been wrong before! Any good ideas will be gratefully appreciated, as Spring is starting to spring he

You might try draining both the hydraulic oil and the transmission cases then pull only the pump off of the rockshaft housing. There is a hardened sleeve that floats on the shaft that is supposed to be pushed against a stationary bronze bushing as the seal between the hydraulic and transmission reservoirs. The hardened steel sleeve is sealed to the PTO shaft with simple old packing rope that is under spring tension. Sometimes the packing rope siezes to the shaft from corrosion if water ever got into the system. Other times it siezes the shaft from just plain old age. As this 'moving' seal wears a bit, oil starts to leak very slowly from the hydraulics to the gear case.

Pull the pump and shaft, clean it, remove all the old hardened crunchy packing, replace it with new, put it all back together & your trouble MAY be gone. It fixed my 44 A. I avoid removing the rockshaft housing if at all possible. It isn't difficult, I just don't particularly like the job.

Take a look at my Powr-Trol page. The symptom of fluid getting low in the hydraulics while going up in the trans is a classic blown gasket.

While my page is about the A, the Powr-Trol unit is the same on the B.

Hi Mark, If your three point stays up when it is raised the leak probably isn't in the lift box.
It sounds as if the pump is leaking into the rear end housing through the PTO seal. That will require pulling the back off, disassembling the pump, and maybe replacing the bushing also. Good luck! I hope this helps. Don
