hi guys, the book says in an overhaul the sleeve deck has to be removed and a new gasket installed under it and in each sleeve. However, if you are just doing a valve job, they don't mention removing the sleeves. What is the difference
Is the removal of the sleeve deck advisable at all times, and is it a difficult job. An overhaul is on my agenda soon. I need some imput badly. Also, what is the date for the Waterloo,Ia show? Thanks for any help I get, this is a real good board

You only remove the sleeve deck if you are changing sleeves i.e, overhaul.

I have only actually seen 1 wet sleeve engine taken apart and it was a Continental Z134. The sleeves had O rings at the top and bottom and ended up with the tops flush with the top of the block. Sealing grooves in the block at the bottom. Where is this deck located in the 1010 engine?

Thanks

The deck is located between the head and the block and from the outside of the engine it looks like a spacer, about 3/8 inch thick.when you take the deck out the sleeves come with it.

Was the engine bult that way to be cheaper or, easier to remove the sleeves? On the Continental engine I worked on the sleeves were driven out from the bottom with a block of wood. I just went and looked at the plate between the head and block. Why did the plate at the corners not follow the contour of the head and block? The corners were just roughly cut off. Maybe to give you something to tap on to get the deck loose?

I dont know why they built it that way,but the 248 gas engine in the 95 combine was the same way.maybe it was made that way was so they could use the same block for gas lp and diesel and change cubic inches for each.It would also be easier to change sleeves this way.maybe DEERE ENGINEER will answer you post.

I found a service manual today and it shows a drawing of the engine. The sleeves and deck appear welded at the top? Is this true? You have to replace the deck and sleeves as a unit? Do you know a supplier?

Also on the drawing, the corners of the deck are shown rounded to match the head and block. On mine they are just crudely cut off and do not match.

Thanks
