Another question in my unstyled B rebuild saga. The oil pump shaft coupling was split so I got a replacement part from JD. The replacement is heavy, solid steel which I'm sure would not "break away" if the pump locked up. Is this the right part? Anybody have in experience with this?

When I tore my 40 B down some previous owner had welded a half inch socket on the shaft-some of those old farmers were pretty inventive!

I wonder if John Deere will replace the drive train when the coupling wont shear . Some 90 day wonder that probably doesnt have a clue made that decision.

Fella's...I believe I know the reason Deere puts out a round type drive coupling. I cannot help but believe that some tool company thought that JD was making the finest 3/8" to 1/2" drive socket adapter that was cheap, plentiful, and taking away some substantial income. Some how, the tool company in question, must have had some "back door" meetings withe the Deere management, and made them an offer "dey shouldnt refooze", and presto, JD now makes the drive coupling round! Bottom line is, you ain't gonna let your new toy set outside and get water in the crankcase to freeze, so don't worry about shearin' the coupling. Use the new type, it works just as good! ;-) Doug in Tx

Hi David, the orginals were lighter. I doubt the new ones would break in time to prevent damage if the pump ever froze or seized up. They went to the different design I'm guessing 10 or 15 years ago. I have never been brave enough to use the new ones. I use couplers out of salvage tractors that are the originals. Once you replacxe it you will probably never need another. Just keep the oil changed often enough to prevent moisture from froming in the crankcase. Good luck! Don

David I just bought a new coupling for my B and i wondered the same thing, the new one is heavier and the outside is round instead of square, so i asked the parts man and he said it was the right one.

David the orginal is fairly heavy duty stuff,if you get ice in oil pump it will shear coupling,if John Deere sells it over the counter I would think it to be OK,find one out of a salvage tractor and compare it. Later Gman
