I got drafted into assisting a friend on a 420 that is supposed to be hard starting. All my work has been on the Blue (Ford) stuff & the Red (IH) stuff. What should I be on the look out for initially, other than the standard problems like fuel & spark? Supposedly if it is tinkered with enough it will eventually start for the son, but it is too much for his father.
Thanks

Allen, first make sure that the gasoline is fairly recent, old gas is bad news for starting. Then if it is still 6v make sure that the battery is at least 5.6-6v during cranking( low battery voltage will really lower the spark output)then make sure it is getting a good "blue spark",then check to make sure it has copper or steel core ign. wires, then make sure the choke is closing "ALL" the way. If all is good so far, run a "cold" compression check to see if it has enough compression to start. Gasoline=100-125 psi, all fuel=70-85 psi. It wouldn't hurt to put in new sparks & ign wires to eliminate those as the problem. Re-post if you find anything.

actually, if everything is in place these tractors usually start fairly easily. Regardless of 6v or 12 v. As someone else stated, they do like to be choked, even when warm. Also set the gas at about 1/3 throttle when starting.

Allen, look back a few pages in the forum. You'll find a question I posed two weeks ago with the same title as yours. Turned out that the previous owner had installed another coil, complete with resistor. This is OK if you're going 12V but won't get enough current at 6V to start. Check to see if you have one of these mounted next to your coil...if so go around it an give it a try.
My '56 420W starts right up now, as long as you choke it even when hot.

I have a 420 that was hard to start. I tried everything from new wiring, points, plugs, battery cables, etc. I finally solved the problem by converting to 12 volt. Now it starts almost on the first revolution of the engine.

I was reluctant to give up and change to 12 volt. But, since this is a work tractor and not a show tractor I need it to start reliably. It cost less than $100 to do this right and got all the information from this site.

We probably need to know a little bit more. One thing to remember when you look at it is that these tractors like to be choked when started. Mine does anyway, and I've heard that from others as well. I pull the choke out and leave it until it is running.
Clooney is the guy to ask about the spark. I think it should have a 3/16" spark jump. He also told me they could be made to start easier & foul plugs less if you trim about .010" off the distributor rotor brass contact.

Best thing we did to improve the starting of our 420 was put on new battery cables to boost the (6V) power to the starter. Starts on the first spin now with full choke. Will then idle smoothly with no choke immediately after starting. This makes me feel it may be too rich but I hate to mess with success since it burns clean.
