I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have a John deere 3020 gas tractor, and it runs great, but the generator lite stays on after I start the tractor. Could someone advise me what the problem could be. It doesn't seem to draw down the battery when it is running, so it leads me to think the generator is working. Any help would be great.

You need to check the batterry voltage after it's run a for a bit at above idle speed. The battery voltage under those conditions needs to be in the 13.8 to 14.5 Volt range.

Thanks, if it isn't, is it the generator or the voltage regulator.

Thank You,

Joe

If the voltage is low, try gounding the "F" terminal at the generator (TEMPORARILY, for testing).

If that brings the voltage up, it points to a regulator or associated wiring fault.

If the generator STILL doesn't charge, there is a problem with the generator.

Mine was doing that too, turned out it wasn't charging the batteries. You might not notice them going dead right away, if all you use them for is starting the tractor.
