I have a 70 gas that doesn't seem to have any response to load of any sort. It runs great, but as soon as the load hits it it dies. What could be the problem, and how can I fix it?

The governor seemed to be the problem, so I took it out and cleaned it up, put it back together, threw in some new points, and it seems to be running better, although still not quite as much balls as my 60....probably the power block in the 60 though.....

Checking out carb for plugged/ restricted orfices, and don't forget to check the sediment bowl screen. Also, make sure your distributor/magneto cap is not cracked or is wet inside. Have an "A" which had a similar problem plus it was hard to start if it sat for awhile. Found damp dirt and chaf in between the magnets and the housing. Once this stuff was cleaned out it was(almost)like a new tractor. If points are good, those things need to be DRY! A good tune up never hurts. Let me know what you find.

I chased this same problem out of a neighbor's G last fall. He bored it and put in high compression pistons. When he got done, the tractor wouldn't pull a sick hen off her nest. Did not have the guts it did before the re-build. Tractor had always had a Series C mag on it & after the re-build it just did not have enough spark to pop 'em off under load. I put my B's Delco distributor on it to show him the difference. Made a different animal out of the G. Just my 2 cents, good luck.

dave, those 70's need a lot of fuel to run right. First adjust the "load needle" on the carb. Keep backing it out 1/4 turn at a time untill it runs better under load. If that doesn't help pull the plug out of the bottom of the carb. & make sure you are getting a good fuel flow there ( let it run out for a while to see if you are getting a continous flow.) if not clean fuel filter screen & check for rust & dirt in the fuel line & tank fitting. If all this is ok there is a little tube in the bottom of the carb. that could be plugged up. Remove big nut on bottom of carb, then run a small sheetmetal screw into the tube from the bottom, put a pair of vice grips on the screw and rap them in the downward direction with a hammer to pull the tube out. Check the small holes for being plugged. If you need help with this tube re-post or e-mail and I will try to send you a picture of this area in the carb. It wouldn't hurt to put a new set of spark plugs in it too.
