I've searched the archives and can only find this post from G-Man on my problem:
I just worked on a 630 that I thought was leaking at the bottom of the pedestal. A good steaming off and a couple trips around the shop revealed that leak was up where the steering shaft enters the sector, and the oil was just running down - a much easier fix than pulling the pedestal. Just trying to possibly save you some time, good luck - G-MAN.

Mine happened all-of-a-sudden, and was blowing so much oil on the engine thru the radiator that it was smoking on the exhaust pipe. The oil is coming out around the splines of the steering shaft. A few weeks prior to that, the roll pin came out of the end of the shaft, so to save time I used a rubber strap around the steering wheel spokes to hold the wheel and shaft in place (oops). So I wonder if I caused wear from the pressure of the rubber strap which caused the leak. I took the worm gear/actuating sleeve/cam assembly apart, removed a couple of the gasket shims to tighten the worm gear against the front bearing, but still have the leak. Don't know what else to look for. Thanks for the help.

There is a welsch plcg in the control sleave. The only way to replace it is to take that unit apart. When you reassemble everything make sure when replacing the roll pin that you put a wire thru the pin and around the control sleave to prevent the pin from working out. I make new control sleaves that do not have this welsh plug any longer. When reinstalling the steering shaft be careful not to knock the plug out again.

Thanks Rich. That explains why I can feel it loose inside with my finger. Must have knocked it out with my rubber strap "temp fix". Good tip about the safety wire. I'm glad the roll pin came out in the field in 3rd gear vs on the road. I used a new roll pin, but the wire could save one of my boys some day. Hoping the tractor lasts that long to wear out another roll pin!

Might be a plug down in where the splines are ? Might also have a crack ?

Mike M-
I didn't see any cracks, and the oil comes right out of the end of the actuating sleeve (around the splines). The idea of a plug sounds possible- there is a thin circle (feels like a dime)inside the sleeve, but it is loose, as I can move it around with my finger. Not sure how it supposed to fit. Still hoping there is "an easier fix" as G-man put it somewhere.
Thanks,
K.C.
