It's easy. Engage the PTO lever and put the tractor in gear. Slowly let up on the clutch and watch the PTO shaft. If the PTO spools up without the tractor driving forward, it has live PTO! Here's some history and other info that might help you out: For these machines, the live PTO was an option. It requires the 5-speed transmission, so any 4-speed model will not have live PTO. It was a dual clutch, with a two position pedal, so it was not independent, but live. There is another option, the direction reverser, that is mutually exclusive with the live PTO option. The model that had the greatest liklihood of having the live PTO option installed is the row-crop utility version (designation: W). These tended to have the live PTO installed unless it was specifically ordered without, or with the direction reverser. The standard (S) and tricycle (T) models usually have 4-speeds, the utility (U) model may have either PTO, or may very well have a reverser on it (depends on what the original owner had in mind). I'm not sure what the special (V) came with as most common. Be careful here with the crawler (C), though. JD called out that ALL crawlers have live PTO. They do NOT mean the dual-clutch style. They're referring to the fact that you can pull back on BOTH steering levers at once. This de-clutches the drive to both tracks, and leaves the transmission output still turning. You can stop and leave the PTO turning, so it is 'live' in that regard. You can't change gears or direction in this state, since the transmission is still running at full power. I have a 420C and find this particular claim of 'Live' PTO to be next to worthless! The 435 is likely to have live PTO. This model is the 430W (row crop utility) with the gas engine swapped out for a Detroit 2-53 diesel engine. There were no other varients made, other than the row-crop utilty. I've seen several 435's and they all had the 2-clutch live PTO on them. BTW, the row-crop utility was the top of the line model for this series of machines, and the 435 was even more so with the diesel installed. This means that the cost of the live PTO wasn't as noticable as it would be on the lesser varients. Plus, the farmer that bought one of these was likely to want every option there was (live PTO, power adjust wheels, lights, etc).
