I belong to a group of 'skilled amatures' who restore and maintain early farm eqpt. for our local fair. We just acquired an early D that has a shattered main case. Is this replacement something that can be done by the average restorer? Most of us have rebuilt automotive type engines, etc. Other than the mass of the pieces, what might we be looking at? Thanks for any and all help.

Tom, you are looking at a lot of work!! Other than that you will have fun. The "D" is an easy tractor to restore. Opening up one of those old "D's" is kind like opening up pandora's box though. A lot of the parts are getting hard to come by, gaskets, bearings etc. It would probably be cheaper to start with a good tractor to begin with. Let me know if you need any info. I just went through one.( didn't put a main case in it though).Keep us posted on your progress.
