I got a 2000 model 4700 48HP compact tractor with around 1,700 hours on it, sometimes when I turn the key to start it the starter just grinds really loud instead of turning the engine. Sometimes I have to cycle the key a couple times to get it to catch and other times I can start the tractor several times and it works perfectly. I took the starter apart and don’t see anything wrong with it so I lubed it up and put it back together. I even replaced the key switch, which seemed to help but it still does it sometimes. JD wants around $800 for a new starter. I’m considering taking it off and sending it to a repair shop to have it inspected/rebuilt. I’m afraid it will eventually ruin the ring gear.

Any ideas on what would cause it to occasionally grind instead of engaging the ring gear?

That sounds interesting. So the 30 series starter is a direct replacement fit? What exactly is a 30 series? When I think of 30 series I think of the old 3010 we had from the 60’s.

I looked at the ring rear and it didn’t look too bad. The starter and bendix also looked good to me. My tractor starts very quick and easy even is below freezing weather it just sometimes she grinds instead of cranking.

The teeth on the fly wheel are now damaged because of the starter grinding against it. A new starter probably won't help. You will probably have to file the teeth on the fly wheel to get it to engage properly. I have 2 4600s that do the same thing. New time don't buy a Deere.

Worn out starter.
You can get a huge 30 series Delco gear reduction starter with at least the double the HP of the factory starter for $200.00. Even in cold weather she's going to start.
