We got a 1961? 4010, sometimes it will just be idling then it will take off to full throttle by itself, the only way to slow it back down is to pump the throttle handle wide open the back to idle, sometimes more than once. It has been this way for many years, I have heard that it is common and a sign that the injector pump needs rebuilt. I also hear that one of these days it will take off and I will not be able to stop it and the motor will blow. The 1964? 4020 has never done anything like this, the 4020 also seems to run a lot richer and cranks easier in cold weather.

Anyone heard of this issue or have any advice?

If it does run away the best thing is to shut fuel off at the tank or unscrew a fuel supply line, before engine blows. This is from experience with 3020.
Don't let the engine blow.

Your govenor band is shot- pump needs to be rebuilt- if the band lets go it shears off 3 little pins inside and then the motor will run wild until- BOOM!!
