Guys, is there a 12V starter that will mount in place of the standard 6V one on a late B? This is the one that goes under the tractor, not on top. I'm just putting 12V to it now and it's working for now, but I'm sure it won't last forever. I can't start it by hand so when it goes, I'm DOA.

Thanks in advance.

i have a 51 "B" and have a new wico mag (not re built) and use 12 volt to crank a 6 volt starter. like previously posted, try not to crank to long on starter without suffenct cool down time. as long as tractor is tuned up good, you shouldnt see any adverse effects from running 12 volts. good luck, d. coleman

Just stay with the 6V starter on the 12 volt battery, it will work fine.

The 6 volt starter has heavier windings than a 12 volt. I would stay with the 6 volt starter.

Actually, yes they will last just about forever on 12 volts if you don't crank them for long periods of time and get them hot, I have done this for years on a 1945 IHC M, a 1947 case VA, and a 1944 cockshutt 70. The only changes I made in the electrical system was installing a 12 volt coil.

It will probably crank better with a 6V starter getting 12V. Then with a 12V starter getting 12V.

Thanks guys. Mike, your tractor setup was a little reassuring. I should have mentioned that it has a 1062 thousanths overbore kit in it, a little bit bigger crank and a little more compression than stock. We'll see how long it holds up. Might start looking for a 50 starter though.

Thanks again.

The later Mod.50 or 520 12 volt starters will bolt right up to your B.

I have a late styled B with the starter under the flywheel. I converted it to twelve volts twenty some years ago and it has the same six volt starter it had when I converted it. No problems and starter still works good.

Your 6 volt starter will work just fine on 12 volts as long as you don't crank on it too long and burn it up. rw

I agree with daedoe, just use the 6 volt starter. I've been using a 6 volt starter on a 500+ cu in "A" for ten years now and it still works fine. Mike

I run several old tractors that I have changed to twelve volts but use the old six volt starter. David B
