f.i.t this isn't a tractor question. you know i've been known to ask a dumb question every now and then and some not related to tractors, but you have some real good thoughts on things. i have a minn winn 78 chev with a 350 engine in it. if i run it and get it hot and cut it off it will crank right back up. if i let it set 10 minutes it want do anything but click. i thought maybe i had a ground problem, cable looked bad so today when it wouldn't crank i put a jumper cable on it to act as another ground and that didn't help. if i let it set 20 minutes it will crank. new started, strong battery. have plenty of bullets for gun if you say its needs shooting other wise any body can jump in and help me i'd apprecaite it. have had problems with wiring in the past but this just started last fall and i'm at a loss on what to do with it. thanks and i appologize for a non tractor question here, but don't know where else to look.

thanks for reply and help. this is like a brand new starter and it is doing the same as the old one. i set the thing on fire nearly one day from a broked lower radiator hose and it blew off with such force it knocked the trans cooler lines out of the radiator. i'm trying to decide if this thing has a fuseable link in it. i hope to dig into it some monday and carry it down to my local mechanic and see if i can get it up on a rack and get a good look under there. i'm considering replacing the all the wires i can get to and will look to see if there is some way to put a shield on it. that thing sure seems awful hot, but its got a new radiator and water pump on it. cauge doesn't show hot at all, but when you raise the hood on this thin and its been running it just seems so hot under there. i wonder about adding a scope on the hood to help bring in more fresh air to it would help. i added an electric fan to it that i can turn on and off inside the cab with a toggle switch until i finally found out that i had a cracked head and that was causeing it to run hot. never blew out any steam or water and didn't show any in the oil. any hints would be apprcaited. have a safe journey.

John:

I'm running out the door to get to the hotel and rested for a 3:30 AM wake up call, but I do remember that some of those GM's of that era had starter solenoids that would overheat. A small crack in a solenoid coil could reveal itself when hot. I seem to recall there was even a factory recall on my '75 Malibu that placed an additional heat shield over the starter. I'm sure others will have better advice, but I will think on it while flying.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Frank
