DRY START?

Hello, I have a 1935 John Deere Model A, that I am about ready to fire-up. It was last started 8 years ago. I read a couple messages about "Dry Starts", which I believe reference the absence of oil on the bearings during starting. Is there anything special I need to do along these lines? Is there a way to prime the oil pump. Once started should I run with crankcase cover off, to be sure there are no leaks in oil lines? Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Gino

Gino, you can crank your tractor over without sparkplugs installed and the fuel off to pump oil through the lines to prime the system. Don't take the crankcase cover off while its running as you will get a oil bath, and is very dangerous with the crank exposed. You won't be able to see any oil lines leaking with all that oil splashing around.Better just to start it and watch the oil guage or indicator pop up. Good luck, it always a joy to hear a tractor run after so many years.Mark
