Hey, I have an old John Deere 40 with a bent push rod and was wondering if anyone knew where I could get one besides the John Deere dealer, because they are $53 a piece from there, or is that a good price for a push rod? Does the push rod just slide through the head and rest in the cam follower? is there a push rod guide or something else that needs to be replaced when replacing the push rod?

I know its not the proper thing to do but it worked. A few weeks ago when I got our old MT out of the back of an old barn where it had been for 15 years I tried to pull it off with a truck. Long story short, the intake valve was stuck and I bent the push rod into an S. After freeing up the intake valve with a hammer and pry bar I beat the push rod back straight with a hammer on the vise and put her all back together. She fired up and ran good, a little tappet adjustment to all 4 valves and now she runs great. My John Deere dealer spent two days looking for the rod before telling me they were $58 each.

Thats not a good price at all. Vintagetractors has them for $10 each. I would look into what caused it to bent. My AC B had one bent but the engine was stuck

If a pushrod is bent. It's time to find out what else is broken and why. You are looking at a symptom, not the problem.

the whole motor was froze from setting outside for a couple of years with water in the bock, I wouldn't think that the exhaust valve would be stuck, but it was, but I've already have everything else loose and going good, I just need to fix the push rod, because I don't want to run it with it bent.

Make sure the valve is free so you don't bend another one.

Push rod sets in there by itself.
