My family have a 4050, which is an updated 4040, as well as a 2940. I definitely agree that the 4040 is built heavier. Both have been excellent tractors though with no complaints with either. I would say that the condition is the biggest part.

the 4040 has a wet clutch if not power shift..the 2940 has a dry clutch...stay with 4040....

Dave, The 4040 is in my opinion a far better tractor. The 4040 is the small end of a big series,ie. 4040, 4240, 4040,etc while the 2940 is the big end of the 2040, 2240, 2440, etc line. When you went to buy them new the 4040 was considerably more dollars. If all things being equal meaning condition and wear I would buy a 4040 before a 2940. John

2940 is made in Mannheim Germany with a Deere manufactured 300 Series engine made in France. The 4040 in made in Waterloo IA with a Waterloo made Deere 400 Series engine.

My first impression is in regard to the transmissions available in each-= do you want one or two shift levers? 2940 is more like the utility tractors, while a 4040 is a field tractor.

4040 is a full size tractor frame. the 2940 is the largest of the mid-size tractors, shorter wheelbase and lighter than the 40 series.
