I'm trying to find out the HP of a 40S and a 40T. One book I have said the 40S is 20HP and the 40T is 25HP, but another book has them both at 25HP. Also, the first book lists the 420S as 22HP and the 420T and 420W as 29HP, while the second book lists them all at 29HP. Can anybody clear this up for me?
Also, do all of these tractors have live hydraulics and a 3pt hitch?
Thanks, Danny

I just want to clarify my question about live hydraulics. I'm assuming there's a control lever to enable or disable the PTO. So, let's say that lever is in the on position and the tractor is in gear, then when you let the clutch out part way, does it start the PTO turning without starting the tractor in motion? I think the answer is yes. But, what about the hydraulic lift? Can you operate the hydraulic lift without having the PTO turning? That is, are the hydraulics independent of the PTO?

Yes the PTO and hydr. are seperate, one has nothing to do with the other. The hydr. runs off the front of the engine so you have hydr. any time the engine is running.Like the other guy said only the 420 5 speeds had the live pto option not all tractors have it and yes you are right on how the pto works if you have it.

Danny, the 420 & 430 with 5spd had a live PTO option, the 40, 420 & 430 with 4spd did not have a live PTO option. The hydraulics for the lift arms (3-pt) were run off the front of the engine so they had hydraulics when ever the engine was running.
