My uncle asked me to get his L running for him so I pulled the mag and took it to my rebuilder, how should I time i when I get it back, normally i would buy the manual but this is my only fix on it. Also what are the standard carb settings.
It is a wico x mag by the way. Thanks Alex

#1 cyl. is the one closest to the fan. I'm not sure which cap wire hole is #1 off the top of my head on those. But all you need is the mag. to fire #1 when the TDC mark on the fylwheel is aligned with the BOTTOM edge of the timing window hole. This should be just after TDC this will prevent kick back. I had my LA aligned with the TDC mark in line with the center slash mark. This made it kick back. Then I actually READ my book and it said to align it to the bottom of the hole.

Mags are timed so that at cranking speed, the impulse trips and spark occurs very close to TDC. If the spark is significantly earlier than TDC, the engine will "kick", and break the starter, whether the starter be YOU or an electric starter.

As soon as the engine "catches", the impulse drops out, and timing advances, all at once, to running timing. WHAT that running timing is, is determined by the mag's impulse "lag angle", selected by the engine manufacturer.
