Cluster gear for a 40

I"ve taken the cluster gear out of a 40V that had a broken off tooth on the bigger of the three gears. I replaced the cluster gear out of another tranny and it"s got a very high pitched whine. That"s unacceptable. Mix and matching those straight cut gears, in most cases, only increases the whine. I took the original gear, with the broken off tooth, welded it up and ground/filed it down to as close as I could get by the naked eye and put it back in tranny. I turned down a fitting to fit on the PTO and connected a 1/2" drill to it, turned it while tranny was sitting on the work bench, and it sounded okay. I reassembled the tractor and it"s got a terrible "click" every time that tooth comes around and is engaged with the gear above it. By just putting the final drives on it was enough load that it clicks hard but only clicks in first and reverse, which are the two gears that are directly connected with the cluster gear.

I"ve found a place in town that has the equipment to reshape the broken off tooth, but they want nothing to do with it cause they don"t know what kind of metal the gear is made of and when it"s heated from the weld, it changes the temper and they don"t want to risk ruining a $1200 cutter if they hit a hard spot. Do you know of a place in this country that could reshape that tooth to exactly match the others?

Thanks,
Johnny
