HYDRAULIC OIL AT TRACTOR SUPPLY????

I have a 1963 4010 and I need to add hydraulic oil to the transmission/hydraulic system. The manual says to use John Deere Type 303 Special-Purpose Oil. I have a Tractor Supply store near my house. Do you know if they sell an equivalent type of oil, and if so what is it, or do I really need to buy the JD oil? How about an auto parts store? I didn't see anything in the archives. Thanks for your time.

Wet brakes, wet drive clutch, wet pto clutch. All the same thing to the oil, it must not soften fiber friction material.
A wet clutch oil can have the "friction modifier" package tinkered with. Dextron auto trans oil is designed to allow some slip during clutch engagement. The Ford type F auto trans fluid allows less slippage. Oil for Allison industrial hydrostatic transmissions is a "no slip" oil.

wow--good question. i have operated,owned and
fixed 50 or so john deeres (dam, that makes me sound old). we have used tsc hydro oil for a long time...now its to exspensive....wal-mart and big r
are the only game in town. i have never seen a
"hydraulic oil" related problem from these "cheap"
oils.

If the oil container doesn't say "wet clutch compatible". Don't use it in systems where there are wet clutches or wet brakes.

Hey buick. Wouldn't the JD spec be different for non wet applications as compared to non wet applications if the regular oil didn't address them? I mean we are talking about additives to support the function and all.

I buy aftermarket oil and the specs are all posted on the container. I think most JD use is 303. I forget what JD calls it's house brand....Hi-Trans or maybe that's an IH trademark. I do recall it mentioning wet brakes (trannies and hyd's including steering systems) on the container but nothing about wet clutch.

I know on cars, if you have positraction you need a supplement for that. Can't use regular GL-5 oil. But no one bothers to recognize your intelligence and tell you why.

So one has to ask, what's the difference? I mean to say do this or don't do that is one thing. To provide a reason why allows me to use my brain and determine if my application has to do with the warning or not. Not dinging you on that but it's a pet peeve of mine and OEM's do it regularly.

Mark

YES, TSC has a "303" hydraulic oil. AutoZone,
NAPA and CarQuest all have it also.

Any good quality UNIVERSAL TRACTOR FLUID will work,Napa sells it,TSC sells it,even some Walmarts sell it as do most oil suppliers.Do not use straight hydraulic oil!

As long as the API (American Petroleum Institute) specs are the same you will be fine. JD oils and lubes are double the price and not worth it. I just replaced the gear oil in my 45 B. Deere wanted $95.00 for 5 gal. of 90W. I bought a high quality Shell brand 80W-90 at a distributor for $49.00. Deere talks about special aditives etc. I think it's like everything else they sell, WAY over priced. I would like to add that there are some inferrior oils and lubes out there. Just make sure what you buy meets the API specs you need.

What do you think they put in deere tractors when the dealer works on them... not that high dollar 5 gallon buckets, they have a bulk tank and that oil comes from cheapest bid..don't know if it has deere additives or not just know that is what happens in east tx...

MAY GOD BLESS THE USA

James, why?

can you pls be more specific?

Do you have the service histories of every tractor you ever repaired before you worked on it the first time?

Unless you have two exact tractors or similar, and have treated one with JD and the other with another inferior oil [or a great oil liek shell rotella], how can you compare them?

Thank you for your time james.

regards,
tstex
