Reading the NE Test for Fuel Economy shows we should all own JD 720D tractors. How accurate are these tests. I am not impressed with the other HP tests. The main problem I have is the tractors were not ballast equally. Even the same Make and model tractors had different ballast weight.

Wasn't the model R the most fuel efficiant of all the 2 cylinder tractors?

Yes the Model "R" would do the more work with a gallon of fuel that wasn't just "JOHN DEERE" 2 cylinder tractors but all kinds at that time and for many years to follow.

i have found them to be very accurate we use the 50-75% load test and they will match our fuel use very close

I have a '55, 70D with about 500 hours since a major. When I bought it it was to replace a MM ZAU. Granted I'd expected to see a substantial savings in fuel consumption but I was shocked! The 720 & 730 had superior gear ratios over the 70 so I'd expect them to be even more productive than the 70. Beats our 4020 for fuel economy too. 4020's injectors are in the shop right now so we'll see if the same is true this summer. With a 12' disc the old 70 hammers, knocks, pounds & barks his way up hill & down year after year while just sipping at the tank. Gotta admit the 4020 is nicer to run!

I remember cultivating with the 720 Diesel as a kid, as I wasnt much into putting back and forth with no end in sight, I wished it had used more fuel so I could stop and refuel, anything to interupt the boring task at hand.

When my dad was in the college of ag. at the Univ. of Missouri in the late 60's, he had to do a project about fuel ecomony/horsepower hours/etc... All dad and grand-dad had were two cylinders. The professors couldn't believe the results. What they recorded and found was that the two-cylinders out performed 4010's and the like hands down.

I think the tests are about as accurate and unbiased as possible. They ballast most tractors very heavily to make sure the actual traction capability is used to measure axle horsepower, not limited by tire slip on their test track. They take a week to make the measurements and put about 40 hours on the tractor tachometer. They are measuring engine and drive train, not tire traction and they measure on a concrete track these days. They started on a dirt track though.

Fact is the NE tests are the only tests we get, and they may quit. The only alternative are manufacturer claims.

Manufacturer claims were the reason for the tests!!!!
