I am going to be changing fluids all throughout, could use a few recommendations as my local dealer wasn't much help. I have read the owners manual and was wondering if anyone uses anything different for the following:

Pow-r-trol--10w30 or ?
PTO shaft--10w or ?
Power Steering--$6/qt. JD stuff or ?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Tom

The owners manual for my 530 recommends the following and that is what I have used for the past 15 years that I have owned the tractor. This is a working tractor.

Crankcase and Oil Cleaner: 20W-20 non-detergent, year around, though 10W-30 is also listed. I've always been afraid to switch to the modern high detergent oils, but will if I ever rebuild the engine.

Power-Trol: The same 20W-20 non-detergent.

Power Shaft Clutch: 10W-10 non-detergent.

Transmission and First Reduction Gear Cover: 90W-90 non-detegent.

Power Steering: Genuine JD AF2235R Power Steering Oil. I have never needed to add very much. In fact, I've used less than a quart over the past 5 years. So unless you have a leak the expensive Jd stuff seems to go a long way. Yeah I know, I'm way over due for a change. It will be changed this spring.

Rick, Great post on the fluid and the disc question I had. I checked the P/S fluid today and their was only about a 16oz left in the resevoir. Added about 3 qts when I realized I had overfilled it assuming the 5qts capacity listed in my manual didn't include the pump (I know, dumb assumption!) However, my P/s "magically" came back to life. The P/S fluid looks like a 20 or 30 weight oil, and the bottle says "used for hydraulic and lubrication". When I stopped at the local Carquest, the owner suggested I try Dexron/Mercon for the PTO Clutch, however I'm not so sure about that. I think its probably not too different than JD Hygard. tom

Yeah, it seems I remember the last time I changed mine that I didn't add the full rated capacity either before it was full. I don't know. As others have stated in their replies, I have also heard that some folks have had problems with their P/S when using other than the JD fluid. So I've always used the recommended stuff. Never had any problems. My machine doesn't use very much. A little expensive at change time but I've always looked at it as cheap insurance. I would just stay with an SAE 90W gear oil for the transmission and 10W for the Power Take Off Clutch.

You can get by with it, however there have been a lot of problems that folks have had with their power steering that went away after they changed back to the correct fluid. There was an artical in one of the magazines a few years ago that said you can change to more modern fluids and be fine in most cases but the 2-cylinder PS fluid should be retained. Should you have strange thing start to happen to yours, try going back to the 2-cyl. fluid before you do any teardown. It may fix the problem. I don't think other PS fluid is going to hurt anything so this is just a FYI.

It will cost more but stay with the 2-cyl. PS fluid.
