We have a 1973 jd300(s/n around 155000) and a 1967 jd 1020(s/n 31919). One's green, one's yellow with a heavier front end. Otherwise the same tractor. Both were gas until the green cylinder head cracked. Found a jd350b diesel for $500 and swapped. The p/s pump was tired. $1100 from jd and nla. Took the steering column from the 300 and put it on the 1020. After s/n 45199 it went from open center to closed center and took its power from the main pump with a priority diverter valve so the steering would never lose power. It worked great, so we found one at a boneyard for $400 and made a cover plate for the hole the old p/s pump made.

300 ought to have a much bigger pump than the 1020s also. 300s use the big US built pump, and the 1020s use the little German pump.

Are you talking the p/s pump? My 300 never had one, and the 1020 no longer has one. My 1020 parts book is much newer than the 300 parts book(came with a much older 300 loader backhoe I once owned. replaced with a 410). The newer book lists pre 45200 parts and post. It also has a mower pump that I've never heard of. Looks the same as the p/s pump.

I'm talking about the main hydraulic pump in front. 1020s come with one of two sizes of a little German piston pump - four or eight piston and has a driveshaft with one keyway on it. 300s, except for some early ones, come with the big U.S. built piston-pump with a splined driveshaft - same as used in many other bigger tractors. The two are totally different. 1020s came with either a .69 c.i. or a 1.38 c.i. pump. Most 300s came with a 2.4 c.i. or a 3 c.i. pump.

Most are closed center with a small German piston-pump up front. A few though have German gear pumps and open-center power steering like the 820s and 830s they were modelled after. Some 1020s were built in Mannheim or Baden-Württemberg, Germany and some of those have open-center systems. I've only seen one or two. The ones built in US and Mexico have closed-center. Even some 1020s with closed-center pumps can have open-center power steering if in the serial # range of 010001-045199.

Hey folks:

We"ve got a 1020 that"s had perpetual hydraulic leak problems due (we are told) to the PS pump. After it lost the last load of fluid last fall, we sent it off to our mechanic with a request to not merely repair the pump: do something different! So, he did what you all are talking about: disconected the pump and rerouted to the main hydraulics.

Got the 1020 back a couple of days ago and of course didn"t test drive/inspect it "til the repairman had driven off. PS is working fine but - once again - hydraulic fluid is leaking from beneath the chassis where the two halves bolt together. Maybe a drip every few seconds while it"s running.

It"s been in the shop 4 times in four years with this dang leak and we are about to just give up. Would be such a shame: everything else works great. It came with a rebuilt engine that starts no matter what and runs like a charm. Any suggestions (besides finding a different mechanic?)

Joe
