I am removing the transmission in a 35 B. I have 2 questions.

1. On the left side of tractor there is a snap ring located on top sliding shaft. I"m trying to remove it with picks, screwdrivers, etc. Is there a trick to this or does anyone have any suggestions on getting this out. Everytime I get under the end of the gap it keeps snapping back in groove. Would it help to heat this? I didn"t want to damage the castle nut or bearing but may have to order a new bearing here if all else fails.

2. On the counter shaft or bottom shaft right side there are bearings between the gear and shaft. These are long cylinder shaped. Can someone send me the bearing number for these to cross reference with a bearing shop? I pulled them out but couldn"t see anything stamped on them.

FWIW, OTC recognized the snap ring removal problem and sold a neat "snap ring service set", No. 620, in the 1950's. It consists of four triangular-shaped wedges - pick the one which fits best between the ends of the snap ring - and three simple cam tools - wedge one of the wedge sides under one end of the ring, and slip the cam against the wedge and under the other end of the ring, and rotate the cam - it lifts the snap ring right up and allows a screwdriver to slip under the ring and work it out. They were advertised in some of the old Field Service Bulletins - I found a set and it's one of those deals - don't use it often but when I need it.... . They are fairly cheap if you find them as most folks don't know what they are.

Your roller bearing/race cross as follows:
JD7527 - Hyatt WRA99206 or Bower J48-2036
JD7528 - Hyatt 94270 or Bower J40-1640
Check with some of the bearing collection houses - www.talonbearing.com for example - they may have them and the price is anyone's guess.

If I were you, since you have the bearings out, take them to a bearing supplier and let them match them up for you unless you can measure the id,od, and length with a micrometer accurately. rw

If you heat it then it will be no longer any good to reuse. Get it up and stick small pocket screwdrivers under it as you go.

Take them to a grinder and dress up the ends and you can even undercut a notch in them to make it easier on the next guy,it could be you ?

One thing I did when I did my 1939 B transmission was use a pair of needle nose pliers and locking "vise grip" needle nose pliers to help hold those snap rings while I pulled them out. Lock on to one side of the split and pull out and at the same time wedge a small sharp screwdriver under the ring. It's not easy but if you have patience you can get it. To re-install turn ring at a slight angle compress it down and push in with a flat screwdriver until it snaps into place.

1. Snap rings give everybody fits – particular if they are the inside variety. One key is that your screwdrivers be sharp as they were when new. As for heat, yes – you can make the ring super red hot and peel it out I suppose. As for your particular configuration I am not with experience! So perhaps another will come with new ideas here.

2. This is a case where having PC330 (Parts Catalog - Styled B) comes in handy. For the '39 & '40 tractors, the L.H. and R.H. roller bearing assemblies are not equal as they are AFTER S/N 96000.

Taking the two part numbers back into PC676 (Parts Catalog for US B), page 24, mid-section, items 12A and 12B are the ones you are seeking. The two part numbers, therefore = JD7527 & JD7528. These two are no longer valid in Deere inventories, but (hopefully) a bearing house will be able to cross it for you. For my latest “H” tractor, is shopped a bearing house with only dimensions (ID, OD and Length) and found suitable replacements from Holland! Hint: Try Russ over at Heartland Tractor Parts if your local bearing house cannot git ‘er done! (PatB)

Thanks for the information Pat. I've got the parts manual but was really trying to get the bearing number versus the parts number to cross reference with a bearing place. I'll probably take the roller assembly into the local bearing place since I've got it out. Thx.
