Small farm in Lancaster county PA, and we need more horsepower to pull no-till drill under new conservation program. Our 2240 simply is too small. Due to small farm can't justify newer tractors and am looking at 4440 or 4240. It would be used for no-till and small side line business of bush hogging/mowing vacant land. I know 4240 would be too little to pull 15' no-till but am hoping to find a 10' no-till. Or should I just pay a few more dollars for a 4440?
Any thoughts on powershift versus quad range?

Thanks to all who gave advice, to this young farmer. Greatly appreciated! I found a JD 4440 with 3,960 hours for only $4K more than a nice 4240 with 6,100 hours. So for the difference I opted for a bit more horsepower and far less hours. It may be a bit overkill, but everyone seems to have a high opinion of 4440"s. Thanks again.

Our TW10 and a 4240 are the same horsepower (110pto and the TW is one less drawbar at 94 vs 95 for the Deere) and we've pulled a 750 with the TW over many acres.
A 4440 would be nicer to have the few extra ponies under the hood. Plus the 4240 has a rotary pump and the 4440 has an inline injection pump. I prefer the inline pumps.

there is no price difference between a 4240 and a 4440. 4240 will should use less fuel. lots of guys around here pull 15ft drills with 4240"s and like tractors

Andrew, I have two 4020's and a 4440. All of them have pulled my 750 JD drill at some time, so either of the tractors you mention should pull a 15' drill. In my area (northeast Missouri) there isn't a lot of difference pricewise between the tractors. The 4440 would be my hands-down choice of the two. Not that the 4240 is a bad tractor because it's not. But you will like the added power of the turbo engine. The 44 will pull everything a gear faster than the 42 or pull bigger implements. The only thing wrong with my 4440 is that it isn't two of them instead of one..:) Mike

Either tractor will work for you as will either transmission.I have both, quadrange and powershift in 4430s. Each have their advantage over the other, depending on the job at hand.I prefer the powershift in most cases.
