Hi all, just located a 1946 long hood A in fair condition, appears to be a slant dash. Just wondering if this is commonly available model or are they somewhat rare? Thanks

The 46 slant dash A's are common tractors.

Here is a picture of "Easy" my 46 slant dash A.

third party image

Call him "Easy" because this is the easiest tractor I have ever "spruced up".

Will be using this tractor to cut hay with a #5 JD mower this summer.

Used it last Fall to rake hay with a 640 JD hay rake.

Hope you enjoy your slant dash 46A.

Mr. Howell, your A sure looks good, congratulations on using the right decal on your air cleaner, that is indeed the United unit. So many restorers get the Donaldson decal on the United units and vice-versa. Only constructive comment I might make is that I think the lights are supposed to be satin black...but I'm not totally sure on that. Anyway, nice tractor!

Thanks for the compliment. "Easy" is one of my favorite tractors.

I have a small JD data book that has an Appendix which gives details on decal types and locations.

Some of the decal "sets" come with both United and Donaldson air cleaner decals.

Even though I do not "restore" my tractors to original, I do my best to keep them "looking" as original as possible.

You are correct about the lights; they should be black.

All I keep handy is the high-temp black for the mufflers and exhaust pipes.

Always well stocked with JD green.

James -- a very hearty "Salute" to you for not having the "A" model designator on your grille. That tractor looks really nice -- you did well. (PatB)

Thanks for the compliment Pat.

I have a small JD tractor guide that has an Appendix which gives details on decal location.

I must confess that on some of my tractors the decals are in the wrong place. To embarrassed to say where on which ones.

I once read that "ignorance is a tough tree to cut, but the sharpest saw is a willingness to learn".

The majority of work that I initially do on my tractors is "clean up" and minor repair.

They usually get "put to work" right off the trailer.

I have purchased the operator's manual, parts catalog, and service manual for each tractor.

I am a firm believer in scheduled lubrication and maintenance on these old tractors.

Thanks for all you provide to us on this forum.

They are fairly common, but I like them because you don"t see alot of them at shows.

VERY COMMON tractor , but rare to find one in really nice shape at least around Ohio. These tractors were the bread and butter makers of that era and were worked long and hard.
