Battery grounding on a 40c

I bought a 40c in December that has the negative battery post grounded. The crawler runs fine but neither of the guages work. I understand that these are supposed to be positive ground. Can I just switch the battery cables so that the positive post is grounded? Am I likely to damage anything? Has anything already likely been damaged by the ground being reversed? Any comments are much appreciated.

George

I presume you're referring to the ammeter and the temperature gauges on the dashboard. The oil pressure gauge is down on the oil filter housing. Clooney already covered the ammeter for you.

The oil pressure and temperature gauges are mechanical. The temp gauge has a bulb on the end where it goes into the head and there is a thin tube encased inside that flexible cable. It is pressurized and the needle moves with the expansion of the gas as it heats up. If it's not working, there is a crack in the line and the gauge assembly needs to be replaced. The oil pressure gauge is just like any other, except that it doesn't use an oil feed line, being right at the source on the filter housing. In either case, if they don't work they aren't repairable.

George, you can swap the ground with little problem. You will have to re-polarize the generator to charge in the correct direction, you should check the wiring to the ign. coil to make sure the (+) side is going to the points. That will not help your gages though, the temp gage is mechanical & the AMP meter will read backwards if the polarity is wrong, but it will still work.... To re-polarize the generator "momentarily" connect a jumper wire between the (L) and (A) terminals on the regulator before starting the engine.
