Thinking about installing a pertronix EI kit in my 1954 JD 70 Gas. Anyone have any feedback on these kits with the 2 cylinder JD"s?

I have installed a couple, and would never go back to breaker style ignition. I have never had a problem getting them installed or getting them to work. They certainly improve the reliability of an old machine. The spark is just like having a new set of points all of the time. How much better could it get?

Myself, I've been having problems with getting the pertronix installed and working on my "G". The reason I am going electronic is for more positive spark when the tractor lugs down during antique pulling. I currently have a standard Wico "X" mag on the tractor. I have been in contact with another gentleman that was having the same problem I have. I believe that we are going to overcome our problem. I plan to go to a pertronix unit for my "520" later this year, for improved starting in cold weather for pushing snow.

Seems to be about as many posts by people who can't get them installed and running right as there are posts by those that can't get the points and cond. to work. Looks like a toss up ?

I'll stick with points and cond. Wayyyyy cheaper to by and replace. I think alot of these electronic ign. are being put in to try and cover up for other problems.

AMEN! Install a properly adjusted new set of points and an EI with no other changes in the same tractor and there should be NO detectable difference. They are both nothing but a switch (one mechanical, one solid state)activated by the rotation of the dist. lobes to saturate the coil windings and then break the circuit to collapse that energy into the center core of the coil and out the coil wire to the plug wire terminals and on to the plug to fire the mixture. We are not talking about an 8 cyl. engine turning 7000 rpm where 100% perfection in dwell/timing can make a few hp difference. The minute difference in dwell accuracy afforded by EI will never show up in a relatively low compression and rpm 2 or 4 cyl tractor engine. Ever wonder why the sellers "strongly suggest" a "HOT" coil and new wires and cap and plugs to go with your new EI installation??? Do the same with your new set of points along with freeing up advance weights if any and you will see the same results. The "switch" is just a switch , save your money. I agree with Mike. ( this is NOT a comparrison of magneto vs coil ign with EI!!).
