Too sound like a broken record, Id use 00 gauge Battery n Starter n Ground cables on a 6 volt system and you might try to remove n clean n wire brush n reattach each n every cable n connection n try her. As posted a ground to a thin or wimpy rusty seat/batery box can also cause a problem. If when you try n crank her the lights dim way down badly and the battery voltage drops drastically (sounds like whats happening to you) Ima thinkin the switch is okay so its a starter problem like worn bushings or an armature at fault....If the cables n battery??? n starter switch are alllll llll okay Im afraid its the starter that needs attention...

Well after 58 years those starter bushings may be getting worn and letting the armature drag. Cheap fix if caught early. Very expensive after it's burnt up.

Check your ground conection where it hooks to the battery box. If the battery box doesn"t make a good ground conection to the rockshaft that can cause a problem. You may need to run a longer ground cable right to the tractor frame.

not an expert, but they'll jump in soon. for now most say clean your connections and have you done something to the cables that is different. welding cable wire makes excelent battery to starter wire. have dealer hammer on lugs for the ends. if you can borrow his tool and after you have run your cable under the floor pan add the cable end. this will save you a bunch of headackes. maybe you've been reading the post on floor plan removal. i've found that to much oil on a starter is not a good thing. it may need removing and cleaning good and relubricating. i'll let pat, fit and john t help you from here.
