I purchased a 420W that's been sitting several years. After a complete tune up (plugs, points, rotor, cap),it is very difficult to start. There is a weak (blue)spark at the points, and an even weaker spark at the plugs. Between the ign switch and (-) side of the coil is a device that appears to be a resistor. There's also what appears to be a condensor hung on the (-) side.I've ordered a shop manual, but anyone out there have any ideas? Bad coil? How strong should the spark be? I've bypassed the ign switch but it made no difference.

One thing i have noticed with some of these models is that they always need choking. Even when warm. Then crank right up if eveything else is ok.

Mike, does your 420 have a 12v or a 6v battery in it? If someone converted it to 12v then it needs a resistor, if you have a 6v battery in it now remove the resistor. Measure the voltage at the coil on the ign side while cranking it should be 5-6 volts (with a 6v batt- 6-10 with a 12v batt). Also is the coil wired correctly? If it still is (+) ground the (+) side of the coil should go to the points, if it is (-) ground the (-) side of the coil should go to the points. It wouldn't hurt to put a voltmeter on the battery to see if it is charged in the correct direction & has the proper voltage. The spark should jump at least 3/16-1/4".

Clooney, What do you mean when you say the spark should "jump" 3/16-1/4"? Where do you measure the spark and how? My 420 acts similar, and I'm not very good with ignition. I can't think at the moment, but is the + and - side of the coil marked? If so, fine, but if not, how do you tell? I sure appreciate all you're info on this board. Thanks in advance.

There are NO dumb questions. Take an old spark plug & bend the center electrode to a gap of about 3/16", then stick it in one of the spark plug wires, then just lay it on the block or valve cover, then crank the engine & look for a spark, it should be blue. The (+) & (-) sides of the ign. coil should be marked as such if it isn't it will be very difficult to tell if it is wired correctly. There is a way to tell the direction of the spark with a pencil lead but I can't remember exactly how. I know it has to do with the way the spark flairs out when the spark hits it. Those 40-420's can sometimes made to start a little easier & foul plugs less if you trim about .010" off the distributor rotor brass contact ( the one that turns & comes close to the cap terminals) that will raise the spark K.V. that goes to the plugs by making it jump a bigger gap. ( the coil will build up higher K.V. before it sparks).

Many thanks to Clooney and LC for the advice. I removed the resistor and the tractor started on the second crank. Now I have to figure out if the thing is 6V or 12V. The generator puts out nothing across the teminals. The regulator is Delco-Remy job but has no external markings to ID the voltage. Next step is to get the gen checked and re-wire the entire tractor. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE HELP.

420W did not come out with a resistor block. should be straight 6 volts...routing past the resistor block and see what you have...

Thanks for the advice, Chuck. You were right on. Meant to say thanks in the previous follow-up, but haven't quite figured out the order of these messages.
