50: Where to start

My 50 just came home disassembled. Where should I start? Should I paint some as I go and touch up at the end. Should I start on the wiring harness yet. Is there anything that definitely be done first? The rear end (with tranny) is completely intact with the only thing left to remove being the floor pan giving fits to the previous owner. I don't want to have to take stuff back apart because I jumped the gun. I've already decided that it would be easier to put the engine in before I attach the frame or would it. Just looking for advice.

Ah so you DID get the 50. Thought you would, good for you. I tried to get the screws out of the platform (floor pan) and never could. Well, I *could* have gotten them out, but I did not feel like drilling them out and re-tapping the holes etc.

It sounds like your 50 is gonna be a sweet machine. If you don't already have one, pick up a cheap digital camera and take lots of pictures. Post a few of 'em.

I have had good luck using an air hammer with a pointed punch tool and holding at an angle it will unscrew them. you will need new screws when done. I get some with a much better allen head at the local nut and bolt place. I fill the head with silicone to keep water out.

If you want paint on the hidden areas I just used a brush and did it as I went. Once the main part is all together and sealed up you can roll it out and spray it to get more cover and hide the brush marks. Any sheetmetal that comes off was always sand blasted and the painted seperately just hang them from wires. I would also bolt the frame up to the main case first. Anything that needs to be done can be done with it attached.

I always have that frame on when i'm doing engine work, it's a lot safer and more convenient without all those blocks under the case. Grind off all the surface areas that you have and prime those hard to reach areas, perhaps shoot green on areas where you think you can't get to it when assembled minus the hood and grille.
