I have a neighbor who purchased a 60 last fall. He took it in to a JD dealer for some repairs and they told him everything behind the engine was junk. They offered him $150 for the tractor. He is into it nearly $2600. Can parts be found to fix this tractor? Should he bring it home and part it out? What do you guys think? Thanks for any input.

I wish I could see the dealer face to face so I could call him a idiot. Get a manual, study and use it, parts are available from Deere, as well as hundreds of salvage yards across the states. I wish I could still find these things for $150.

The tires alone(if they are O.K.) would be worth more than that! Have they shown your friend what the problem is? He can get lots of advice on this forum if he wants to repair it or opt to sell it "as is", as a parts tractor. For ALOT MORE THAN $150!

Alan the centers from the rear rims are worth more than that. Tell your friend, if you want to restore a tractor properly,he will have to spend some money. There is no other way. I would also look for another dealer.... Anyway I'm sure there are some people who buy two cylinders, fix them up and make a profit I can't figure out how but it has probably been done...Tell your friend to spend the money fix the tractor right and he probably will not have to restore it again in his life time.. DO NOT, DO NOT let your friend sell his 60 for $150.00. It is worth about a $100 in parst, $2000 if it has a wide front, $3000 if it has an JD 3 point hitch. The point is, this tractor is worth much more than the dealer is giving; the dealer knows how much money there is in it that he can get.

The vendors on YTMAG.COM and their classifieds are the best source for parts for the 60. I still can get parts for my '36 A from the classifieds and the vendors.

Good luck and tell him not to sell it!! Nick

Don't you mean thousands in parts value?

The dealer's comments and offer probably mean its older than everybody in his shop and they don't KNOW how to work on it.

Hi Alan, you don't say what the exact problem is, or the overall condition of the 60 is, but it is worth 4 to 5 times that to part out. Sounds like that dealer is trying to aquire a bunch of cheap parts.

I will give him 150 in a heartbeat. Bought a parts 60 several years back for 200 and it wasn't even all there!!! Behind motor may be junk or it may not. Some dealers are not too Honest (Yes, really) and may be setting him up. Besides, nothing is easy and half of the fun(?) is doing it yourself. A trans may seem daunting but it really isn't that hard, just time consuming.

You could probably fix the 60 for the 150.00 you were offered there are alot of parts around, and they arn't that hard to work on.
