You gave him a pretty good offer depending on the condition of the rest of the tractor. There is a pretty good chance the top o-ring grove is pitted and that can be costly to have repaired. I have used JB Weld to repair them, but it isn't an easy job to do it right. I would never, ever plug a weep hole and I don't remember a service bulletin recommending the practice.

Personally I would not plug them as they are designed to drain off any antifreeze that slips past the top o ring and thereby prevent the antifreeze from passing the lowest oil o ring.

If you do rebuild in the future, it was suggested to me (by JD) when I rebuilt my 4010 to buy an extra few packs of the o rings and put one in the middle groove where the weep hole drains. This way if you have a failure on the bottom oil o ring or top cooling o ring there is another as a backup.

Good luck!

I actually cleaned and opened up the ones on ours. I figured if they were leaking I wanted to know before it got in the oil pan.

My first JD was a 4020 and I saw this little hole on the side of the engine (6 of em) and fluid was coming out of it. Don't remember what I thought but bought the tractor any way.

Don't remember how or when I found out, but it wasn't long before the thing was in my shop getting a major inframe.

What I found out was the whomever overhauled it last put the red and black orings in the wrong places. Since one is made to resist oil and the other ethylene glycol, getting them mixed up just made them fail sooner which they did.

I paid $5000 for mine too and shouldn't have paid more than $3000 just like your offer.[

I believe I have a Deere service bulletin that advocates plugging the weep holes.

I know the side console 4020 engines do not have weep holes, but uses the same set of o-rings and the sleeves will interchange (but shouldn't be).

Yet there is a SB saying don't put late pistons and sleeves in an early diesel. Seems the deck height is a bit lower in the later engine and that causes low compression in the early engine. So they can't be too much different.

GOLF TEES, MATCH STICKS WHATEVER... THIS IS A WARNING SIGN JUST LIKE AN IDIOT LIGHT ON YOUR DASH. WOULD YOU PUT A PIECE OF BLACK TAPE OVER AN IDIOT LIGHT IF IT WAS ON? THE LINER ORINGS ARE FAILING AND SOONER OR LATER YOUR GOING TO HAVE COOLANT IN THE ENGINE OIL. MAY BE 1 DAY, MAY BE 5 YEARS. EITHER WAY THE LINERS HAVE TO BE PULLED.

If you plug them then the antifreeze may go into your oil. Plan on new sleeves + overhaul.
