I'm a first time model D john Deere owner. the motor is stuck, the paint gone, and the tires are horrible. but i feel in love with it at first sight. serial number 158654. how do i tell if it's styled or not, and why don't i see many John Deere Model D's out on the web? Are they just too good that nobody wants to sell them or doesn't anybody want to monkey with them???? thanks in advance to all who respond. Kim

congrats on your "D". there is nothing that will draw a crowd like a straightpipe "D". yours may have a muffler, my dad has a 36 model. you may know this but the secret to starting a 'D' is to have an oilcan [the kind that you just turn upsidedown and push the bottom of] with gasoline in it. if you have the petcocks with the cups on them fill the cups with gas the open the petcocks. this will put gas directly into the cylinders. if you don"t have the kind with the cups just turn the petcocks so they point up and open them and squirt some gas into each cylinder. if carb and magnito are operating properly it will probably start on the first or second round of the flywheel. turning the flywheel fast isnot important. if your "D" has water injection make sure if you use it that you don't have antifreeze in the radiator. the :D" will run great on numberone fueloil after properly being warmed up. at least 180 degrees. find something to hook it onto that will make it work. hearing it run is the best part. enjoy.

Welcome to the club of JD's. I had a '46 D and it was fun learning about it. The only problem I found with the D is that the major parts are HEAVY - Block, radiator, flywheel. Parts are easy to find through YTMAG.com, ATIS.net, or any of the vendors on these sites.

The manuals are still available from your local JD dealer. The D is a good tractor, especially if it is electric start. If it is a hand crank, then it gets a little tempermental. Inspect the steering system for wear. I found that my steering rod joint at the end of the steering box was really worn.

Good luck on the new hobby, Nick

Welcome to the "D" world Kim. D's are my favorite, don't know why as starting at 7 years old I had to spend many a day on a 1928 D on steel. Follow Clooney's advice for sure. When ready for parts let me know as I know a guy that just bought 66 D's,and lots of parts. (thats not a miss print.) Best of luck and remember your best help is the very knowledgable people in this forum. Bob

Kim, "D" s/n-158654 is an early 1945, it is also a styled tractor. There are a lot of "D's" around. If you are from the east you won't see as many as in the midwest or canada. If you look around you will find lots of parts and pictures.

Welcome to the club Kim, You are in for some frustrations and some fun, A good place to start is to purchase some books on JD tractors. The shop, owners and maint manuals are mandatory reading and will get you going . Joining a local tractor club is also a good idea. Keep your eyes and ears open and learn!! have fun and good luck . Hello Kim,
I've restored many D's before and like these people have told you the parts to a D are very heavy. Getting the radiator off is a heavy job it self. A eng. hoist and a bracket mounted to the radiator work great if you don't have one about two strong men and your self will work.Have them hold it and you take out the bolts.A parts manual and owners manual are a must!Best way is to jump in head first and you'll pickup on it quickly. They are a lot of fun and frustrating, and expensive. If you need any help or questions call me I'd love to help!!
Thanks Mike
