I have the tractor apart, replaced the clutch assembly and am wondering about the flywheel. It has some pitted rust spots since the tractor has sat awhile,(4 yrs). Does the flywheel need to be plained down or can I get by just cleaning it up, use some steel wool and fine sand paper?

How much can be safely taken off of the steel fly wheel plate when resurfacing? will resurfacing cause heat billed up and cause warping if too much is taken off.

I agree with Bob...get that flywheel resurfaced at a machine shop. And the tool is really useful/needed to get a good adjustment on the both the drive and PTO clutches. I recently redid my 4010 and bought new springs, pilot bearing, both throw out bearings and had all the surfaces machined. Last but not least, I also replaced the bushings in the clutch pedal shaft as these wear out and you"d be surprised what new bushing can do for you.

Good luck!

Did you replace the "clutch" because it was worn out, or because it was rusted from sitting?

Did you take the pressure plate apart, and have the cast iron plate resurfaced?

The pressure springs should be replaced, or at the very least tested. Replace the three long bolts that pass through the release fingers. (They eventually crack and break in the threads.) Check the three square "driving pins" for grooves worn in them that will prevent the clutch from releasing properly.

Oh, yeah, get the flywheel resurfaced. (About$30 or $35.) Replace the ball bearing "pilot bearing" inside the flywheel.

Then, when you get it all assembled to the flywheel, you will need a gauge tool to set the "finger height".

Beins we are talking about a 4010 which quit production in '63 as I recall (45 years ago is a long time) I think you would save yourself some possible grief down the road if you followed Bob's advice. Remember after the money is spent the memory is long gone. With you is what you bought (or didn't buy) with it. BTDT
