Can anyone give me any advice on what to look for on a 1992 4955 Deere with approx 5000 hrs on it ? Is there any way of knowing whether the trans is good or worn, any tests I can do (without specialist tools or gauges). It is a one owner tractor that has been mainly used for plowing and subsoiling and is the dealers yard. Just wondering. Thanks in advance,
Chris.

They are a great tractor that tend to have more power than advertised. I've run two, both with MFWD and powershift. One had 38" rubber and one had 42" rubber. The one with the taller tires didn't have the lugging ability that the other had but it was faster on the road and still had great power. They are meat and potatoes tractors that when well maintained will make you very happy.

put in like 7th 1500 rpm and while driving push in clutch and see how far it rolls. if it keeps creeping then could have probelms like splines worn on clutch hubs or disks and plates sticking together. do the same at 2000 rpm. and in 2nd reverse. while its sitting at idle its gonna rock back and forth. dont worry they all do it especially while cold. i assume you are looking at buying one. pull the transmission oil dipstick and smell it. if it smells burnt or is very dark then stay away from it. the color should be just to where you can barely see it on the dipstick. pull the filters and cut them open and look closely for and metal, brass, or clutch disk material. i just did b hi, c lo, c1 and c2 on a 4755 because it had clutch material in the filters.

When you are driving this tractor you could hold the brakes to see if it will pop out of gear or do any thing funny.

Most 4455s had the powershift, great tranny. We run a 4455 and a 4450, both with more than 9000 hours on both. Strong running tractors that will last and hold their value very well. The 4455 is almost my favorite tractor out of the whole clan of Deeres we run, even though we do have newer (8400) tractors.

They are a great tractor from my experience. We have one (FWD) which has done all our tillage for the last 4 years (ripped in the fall, anhydrous, herbicide application in the spring with field cultivator). The only issues we have had are a couple sensors which are easily replaced. Best advice is talk to the previous owner if possible. Look for leaks and at the seals and knuckles in the FWD if it is FWD. I consider them bulletproof, as long as the tractor was used correctly by the previous owner.
