I was having trouble with the carb on my '41 model B. I had posted a few messages and got lots of help. Pat emailed me and I ordered his carb overhaul CD and even though it's for a H, it go me started in the right direction. The old girl runs very well now. The "secret passage" was blocked. She still takes a bit sometimes to get her started, I could have a bit more to figure out what she likes, but now she runs very well. Thanks again Pat!!!

Jon -- Thanks for the kind remarks. We are small, very small and so the motto here is to Try Hard in order to satisfy a need. It is so gratifying to hear the reaction of a fellow who, after opening a small 1/4-inch long passage way in the carburetor, can now enjoy his tractor purring along. We are all feeling better with you because we all have had that kind of a "break-thru" at one point or another.

There are some on the board who scoff at simple-sounding questions, but for a newcomer to Deere, a correct answer to what seems like a little question can often open eyes to much larger issues. And it is the newbie I seek to help. Those steeped in two-cyl Deeres don't need me or anyone else telling them how to check oil level or how to drain the main case, or how to start the engine. But, if they ask, I try.

To be fair here -- I want to stress to all newbies -- get all the publications you can lay hands on that apply to your tractor BEFORE tearing into it. More often than not, you will save a ton of grief and perhaps money as well. For a quick list of publications still available for Deere "lettered" models, go to the JD-H Restoration Site (below). Once there, scan across to ARTICLES 1. From the drop-downs, select DEERE PUBS. Page 2 matches manuals to tractors, and at the bottom of page 1 are instructions for obtaining the books. One last thing -- you DO have to READ & USE them! Happy Tractoring! (PatB)

Cool!

It takes a bit to find out what each girl likes to get her started. I've learned on mine that the best way to get it started is to begin with the shutdown procedure: shut off the gas, open the bowl drain and let 'er run until she dies. Then when I go to start 'er up, I turn on the gas, let the bowl fill, full choke for ONE pull, then half choke or less and she'll usually go on about the second or third pull. I darn near gave up until I figured out what she likes, but the old '37 starts just like new now that I know what she likes.

I remember the old '36 A we had around the place when we were kids. We never did figure that old thing out and we'd pull and pull and pull and pull and pull and pull -then switch people- and pull and pull and pull and pull and... We just never did get the hang of it but we were just kids then, too, and didn't understand things very well...
