Mornin". I"m getting back into the hay business after being out for 25 years and looking at newer (not new) mower conditioners. Used to operate a self propelled hay swather which was VERY efficient in terms of operation (being able to cut any direction without having to run over the hay.)

What JD models out there (used level) would be good pull behinds that articulate in the middle allowing me to cut a pass, turn around and move the mower over to the other side for cutting and go again. Will be cutting alfafa mainly so will need conditioning as well.

Thanks for any input you may have.

Sickles are obsolete here in reply to 61-4010, 03-01-2008 05:16:04
Generally speaking, unless you are growing irrigated alfalfa, most growers will tell you a disc mower-conditioner is head and shoulders above a sickle machine. For some reason, sickle machines are still popular with irrigators. I would not willingly set myself up to mow hay with a sickle machine if starting out. 945 and 946 are great machines.

i don't see the point in doing all the manuvering with the mower. lay it out and cut all on direction, less wear and tear on you and machine and get-er-done faster. with a little practice on corners you can turn tractor and then mower and have mower in line and ready to cut before the tractor is lined up. a tractor with a forward speed reducer type transmission works wonders here.

JD 1600 or 1600-A seem to be deere's most popular (sickle style) center pivet mower cond. 12' to 16'. mite be a little short cond. almost same head as self propeled windrower.
