730 Diesel question

I have a fuel system part question about my 730 diesel. I am told that there is a check valve assembly for the return fuel line. So they don"t return too much fuel. I can"t find it in my parts book. I was told it was an update. I have 2 friends with 730s and they both have them. The one was put on in the 60s or 70s when my friends dad was farming with it. They said it wouldn"t pull they put the check valve in and it was back to normal. I checked my pump timing tonight and it is right on and the rack is set on about 16. So I started it with the return line off and it is returning massive amounts of fuel. Does anybody know about or have any information regaurding these check valves?

Thanks Clayton

If I remember the rack should be set on 13, not 16. I installed a few of those valves back in the early 60s. They were supposed to increase the horsepower by about 3 hp as I recall.I was never really convinced the valve made that much difference, but they did help. They also helped when bleeding the system a bit. Truckers in those days did essentially the same by crimping their return lines. Guess I should dig out my old service school books, huh?

It's been awhile, but isn't that rack set too far open ? That return line check valve is in the parts book. At least the copy I have ? It is built into the fitting that goes into the pump cover. Early tractor had no return, later ones added a return then later yet that check valve. I think it may be to keep the fuel from entering into the pumps through the return line if the fuel is shut off. My 720 has the return line and no check valve and if I shut off the fuel to service the fuel bowl fuel keeps running out from the tank through that return.

The camshaft was redesigned to help stop them from running backwards. I'd have to check my parts books and see if it was the end of the model 70 or the begining of the model 720 where this was done ?

Mike I dont have my PC either, but I'm thinking that the different camshaft may have been one of the black dash changes. The Fuel return on top of the rack was also a black dash change.
