Jonathan, Sounds like you about have that magneto figured out. Lets see if we can get it the rest of the way. If you pull the drive cup and spring off, you should have two thick washers with a notch in each of them. It is common that when you line up the end of the spring with the washers, it goes in the top washer/slot, but hangs on the bottom one because they are not perfectly lined up. This prevents the drive cup from going down over the impulse stop plate properly. Try the following. With the spring in the drive cup, raise the end of the spring that goes in the washer slots about 1/8" or so. Then, with the aid of a screwdriver, as you place the end of the spring in the top washer/slot, work that end of the spring around carefully and try to push it down into the bottom washer/slot. It takes some fiddling, but it will go. Then carefully wind the drive cup one turn and place it down over the impulse stop plate, and it should go. Post back if this doesn't work and we'll try something else - we'll get it one way or another. I wish you the best on your work with this tractor - it's great to have someone your age learning how to do repair work on them! Congratulations!!
