GPWT Texas sand wheel?

Anybody know what part number should be on this wheel? I ran across one this weekend and judging from pictures I've seen they belong on a GPWT or early GPA. I've heard these things called Texas sand wheels but that may or may not be the case. It does have 6 lug bolt holes and is not spindle mount. Thanks

junklover,
The GPWT "Texas" or "sand" cast wheel has c/n C334R. There are two versions - the earlier ones had large holes and the later ones small holes. The same wheel was also available on the A.

Did the later version with the smaller holes also have strengthening ribs cast into the back side? The wheel I have appears to be the early version because it does have rather large holes. I'm gonna sandblast the crud off this evening and check the part number

the early texas sand wheels #C334R had large holes and no ribbing on the back. the later version of the same wheel had smaller holes to combat the wheel cracking that was occuring on the earlier version. the ribs were not offered on the JD wheel but a wheel on the oliver tractor, while very similar to the JD wheel, did have the ribs. not sure on the hole sizes on the oliver wheel or if they were having any problems with the wheels breaking. find the casting number on the wheel you have and see what it is. the casting number will be on the front of the wheel if it is a JD (not sure if not JD) between the holes.

Do you know if there is any correlation between the change from the C333R hub to the heavier C391R hub and the change from large to small holes?

I think I've got Oliver sand wheel info around here - need to start getting it sorted out for the GOG.

i believe the weak point initially was the wheel C334R. after determining that there was a problem, deere beefed it up, making the castings thicker, and made the holes smaller, i suspect the C333R hubs were the next to fail. so a beefed up hub C391R was produced. i do not know why they kept the number the same for the wheel and changed the number on the hub after they were 'improved'. they all interchange anyway. my GPWT has the early wheels and the early hubs.

after posting the above, i checked my GPWT front wheels. i also recalled some info on the hubs and referred to the parts book, which i should have done in the first place. the hub change from C333R to C391R occurred at serial #400679. the C333R hubs use lug bolts and nuts to hold the wheel to itself. not sure if the C391R hub is threaded to use a lug bolt only to hold the wheel on. the wheels on my wide tread are the later wheels as the holes measure about 2 1/2" across. the earlier wheel measured about 3 1/2" across.

Just went out and checked and the serial# is C334r and the holes are 3 1/2" dia. So is this wheel GPWT or A or both?

your wheel appears to be an early front wheel from the info you have listed. it would be for an early GPWT and not for an A, although it might fit on an A with the correct hub. if you are considering selling it, i would be interested in purchasing it.

I'm going to sell it, thought I'd E-bay it. I'm wanting to purchase a set of rear round spokes for my 36 model A and have no use for this wheel.

I'm not sure, I think the only difference was the hole size. However, sand wheels were used on other brands - Oliver for example - so the casting number needs to be found.
