I curently heat my house with wood, using an oil burner with summer winter hook up to heat water and the house when the wood fire goes out. I am thinking of switching from fuel oil to propane. Just to get away supporting the arabs.. Does anyone have any experience with heating with Propane and How expensive is it any pros or cons... I use about 250 gallons of oil a year..

Our new energy efficient solar sited home in Wis. with geothermal heat pump costs about $120 per year to heat and cool comparedto our older home using 2,000 gallons of L.P. and 4 to 6 chords of wood per year.I heated with a lot of wood for 38 years with the older house and purchased a wood stove for the new house but never got it installed. I gave my daughter the wood stove and my son the chain saw. Go geothermal

Thank you all for the information. I will continue to burn wood as long as I can cut it, and keep the oil burner, maybe try a gas water heater, does any one know anything about them. I guess I should not complain about one tank of oil a year. Tony W. I bought a Quadra Fire wood stove 4 years ago and would highly recomend that brand. Check them out on line. Since I have that stove my oil burner only runs to heat the water. Thanks again Guys.

I live in northwest Indiana and just paid my propane bill of $285.00 for the month of Jan. Now put on $150.0 for the electric bill. We also have a fire place that has been burning all the time since the beginning of Dec. and have went through about 10 truck loads of wood. I am pulling that out this spring and putting in a wood burnning stove. A fireplace is good with the misses and a cold one but that is it! My rental has a stove for 1250 spuare foot house and his bill for gas/electric bill for the same month was just over $100.00 I know some don't like the mess of stoves or fireplaces but as many have said why give the money to some other country that wants to KILL us. That is my two cents worth and will be waiting for the change

It takes 1 1/2 gallons of propane to do the work of 1 gallon of heating oil. so, if your heating oil costs $3.20 per gallon, the propane needs to be $2.13 a gallon to get the same energy at the same price. Propane is bascially made from the volatile components removed from gasoline.

Well, yes and no. Your idea is correct but by the time either of these fuels are run thru their respective furnaces, the math you applied does not follow. Propane run thru a 92-96 % efficiency unit looks just about as economical as fuel oil thru a 70 some percent furnace.
Then people have to compare the cost of removing the exhaust, propane needs a 2 inch pvc while fuel oil needs a triple wall stainless pipe.

Well, my reply is "yes and no" again. There are 83% efficient oil furnaces that vent via a PVC pipe just like many gas furnaces. Some of the most reliable and cost-effective gas furnaces are %80-90%. Those at higher levels have poorer reliabilty - and often cost more down the road.

As I said it takes 1 1/2 gallons of propane to get the same engergy as one gallon of heating oil or diesel. As far as the rest - regardless if for heat or powering an engine - it depends on the equipment being used. The cost per BTU is one concern, and how well it gets used is another.

I heat with wood, and have several propane and oil heat sources for backup. For me - I'd rather have a 80% efficient furnace that's reliable and parts are easy to get for - than an high-efficiency unit that is not as reliable and parts are not easy to get. I know of many high tech furnaces, propane and oil, that are problematic, expensive to repair, and parts are proprietary.

I have always wondered what kinda effiency you could get out of running a small diesel engine to heat with ? seems alot of heat loss is out the exhaust that would have to be reclaimed too.

I meet a fellow that had his own gas wells and then ran a genset to make his electric for his shop and houses and also used the engine heat in his shop. This was a good way to go,but you have to have the FREE gas to get it all going.

In east Texas, last week I paid 2.60 per gallon for propane. Only use it for water heater. Bought a fire place insert with thermostat and fan three years ago and have been very pleased with it. I bought the fireplace insert because propane prices have been steadily rising.

Fuel oil or propane, made out of the same stuff, you're not going to get away from supporting the Arabs, regardless of what you do.
