this is all good info, the tractor is on its second owner and was bought in 86. That was the info from original owner that it was a 4320 with heavy duty rear end. Who knows for sure with these 30+ year old tractors what has happened to them during their lives. Not sure if rear end is a 4620-any way to tell without tearing it apart?? The tractor would be more useful to me at 540rpm since all my implements are designed for low rpm.

Aktom, odds are the "rear end" he is referring to is the differential. It likely has been updated to the newer, heavier design. It IS possible that your tractor originally came with only the 1000 rpm setup. This was an option on these models. Look above your shaft and see if there is another shaft sitting crosswise to the tractor. If there is a plug in the hole instead of a shaft being there it's possible you have a single speed PTO. My guess is that you do not have the 540 shaft or are not seeing it. But it is possible you do not have. Mike

We got the our 4320 in 1971 and there is one sitting 30 feet from me right now. They were only made in 1971 and 1972. The previous owners claim of a heavy rear end probably meant that, like many 4430's, the rear end had been rebuilt and another gear added to the ring gear.

Both tractors tore them out if the engine was turned up and JD mechanics made them heavier while in the shop. I do not believe there were any 45 or 46 rear ends put on 4320s.

Changing the shaft speed is simple if you have a heavy duty needle nose pliers and park the tractor with the front end downhill so you loose less oil. Rotate the ends of the snap ring to the flat spot on the shaft when removing it and rotate it off the flat spot when the switch is done.

You don't seem to understand that 1000 rpm PTO only was an option for the 4320, and that's what this gentleman has, it can't be changed to the two-speed unit.

Well, if that is the case, I would like to see a picture of the left side of the rear end just left of the pto shield snap. I wonder what kind of plug JD put where the second shaft was carried.

Also, a 4320 axle measures 3 and 3/8 inches and 45 and 46 axles were larger.

raddlechain I'm with you on the no 4620 rear end option on 4320's. I certainly don't remember seeing that code in price book when I sold NEW 4320's. Jim

Did JD only offered the 1000 rpm in the 45 & 4620's?

Yes, the 4520 and 4620 were available only with 1000 rpm PTO's.

I've got a 1972 Sales Manual with all the ordering codes, and there's no such thing as the "Heavy Duty" or "4620 Rear End" option for the 4320. I don't know where some of these guys get these ideas.

Yes all the replies are correct. this 4320 tractor was originally ordered with a heavy duty rear end so it has a 4620 rear end and a single PTO at 1000 rpm. It sounds like it may be a major job to change to 540 rpm

There wasn't a "heavy duty" or "4620 rear end" option for the 4320, that's sheer B.S. The "1000 rpm only PTO" option on this tractor could also be ordered on 4020 Tractors. This tractor is a rare example of the 1000 rpm-only PTO option. If you have to have dual-speed PTO, your only choice is to trade the tractor for a 4320 that has one, or change all your PTO equipment to 1000 rpm operation.

If it has a 4620 rear end, then changing to a 540 PTO requires replacing most evereything from the clutch back to put all 4320 parts and cases. It wasn't made for that change.

Done it a hundred times! 1) clean the area
2) above the pto is the other stub shaft sticking out to the left sideways. remove the snap ring and remove shaft
3) remove snap ring from the pto
4) with the desired shaft in one hand remove the pto stub with the other hand
5) Stick in the new stubshaft 6) place the removed pto stub shaft in the sideways storage hole
7) replace snap rings
8) DONE yea!

When putting in the desired shaft you will need to turn the shaft some to get the splines to line up. One lined up it may take a little light thump of a hammer to get it to seat in. When removing the pto stub you will lose about a cup or two of oil.

That"s true on the 20-30-40, etc. series, smaller tractors, but this guy has a 4320. Had just the 1000rpm setup.

I think you are thinking of a 4520 or 4620 which only had a 1000 RPM shaft.

A 4320 should have a 540 shaft.

My 4320 has both shafts, just like my 4020 and 4430
