Hydraulic Problem

When I start my MT, both lift arms go all the way up and stay there. With the control levers down, sufficient force or load can push them back down some but they immediately go back up when the load is removed. I have removed the unit from under the seat and pulled off the hand lever's casting. The valves fit very well - no slop and they move freely. The valves do change position when either the hand lever is moved or the lift arms move. When I drained the fluid, I saw some foam come out the drain port. I think the mechanics are fine and my problem is the foam that was in the oil. Does this make sense? Everything looks like it should work fine to me. And I know foam can raise havoc with hydraulics. Maybe someone put in high detergent oil. I don't think it is water as the color of the fluid looks great.

On our MT, the lift arms are always up when the tractor is running unless there is a load on them.

John, how do you attach the implements. It would seem that you would need to turn it off the engine so the arms would go down and stay there while you are hooking up something. Am I right about this?

We would make sure the levers were down. Usually, we would shut the tractor off as it took a bit of time to attach the implements. Sometimes we would just pull down on the arms and hold them while we hooked up the implements. It didn't take a lot to pull the arms down. The only two implements we used were a #5 mower and two-row cultivator.

Denny, if you have foam in the oil ,it could be air comming it your suction line via a seal or a hole in the line , it is normal for the lift arms to raise on these units with out a load on them, that is why the 40 420 430 all have the return spring on them .
