Replaced PTO oil seal.. leaks even worse now..

1530 Diesel...Had a small leak from the PTO shaft.
Took it apart, cleaned everything spotless... Put on a new oil seal. Used a new gasket and Permatex. Let it cure for a couple of days. Poured in some Transmission oil, and it leaks in a small steady stream from between the PTO shaft and the quill. (It used to just be a drip..drip..drip.) Does it sound like the new oil seal is not sealing? What could cause that? Thanks for any ideas that may help me figure this out.

the easiest way to keep a nw seal from leaking is to not drive it completely in as far as the old one was if you can. on the pto shaft you might clean it up with some ember cloth first that is real fine and only use it going around the shaft and not stright up and down it with the splines. i think that others have suggested wax paper as a protector for the seal while your sliding it on over the shaft. just don't tap it in that last lick and it will ride on a different spot on the shaft. also use a piece of pipe to drive it on with that goes out as close to the edge as it can. this keeps the seal from being set in at a little bit of an angle or twist in the seal. on my old b i used two seals one in backwards and one in the right way. hasn't leaaked in 8 years.

Exact same thing happened to me with my 1530. After three oil seals, a speedy sleeve and a lot of swearing, I just said to heck with it and park it facing downhill when possible. Otherwise I top it off with Hyguard everytime I use it. I was told by my JD parts guy, that if I go for a fourth try to put some JB Weld around the PTO shaft where the oil seal is. If I remember, even a little bit of wear on the shaft from 35 years of use will cause that to leak. Good luck and please let me know if you get it fixed!!

If a speedy-sleeve did not outright fix the problem then you cut the new seal when you slid it over the splines. Nothing will fix that short of spending a good deal of time filing on the PTO splines. Then wire brush it and then use emery cloth on it. And after all that go ahead and use a greased pop can as a protective sleeve for the seal over the splines.

#1 reason new seals leak is an out of round shaft condition due to bearing wobble so pre-load old bearings if possible and/or replace them.

#2 reason new seals leak is a weak inner spring - this is kind of a built in obsolescence issue but one I always avoid by cutting off 10% of the spring's length anyway on every new seal I can lay my hands on. I've never had one burn out either. I will also pop the seals on all new bearings that I replace to ensure that they have adequate amounts of grease - again a built in obsolescence issue. What do I find in those sealed bearings? The survey says - 1 in four have nothing but oil in them. Homework for this lesson is to grease all sealed bearings and re-spring all seals.

My seals don't leak.

New seal may of folded it's lip around or spring popped off ? You do have the spring loaded side of the lip to the oil don't you ? Did you put grease on the seal lip to prelube it ? and use a shaft protector to protect the seal from being scratched by any splines ?
