Are the older "A" cams [part # A1142R]the same in lift ,duration, lobe sep. as late "A" serial #620324 up [part # A3583R]...thanks for any help ...Kent

Yes, for some reason some people do use a 620-630 cam in an "A". All I can say is they must enjoy changing cams. According to the service manual at the local JD dealer, the valve open/close timing and lift #'s for styled A, 60, 620-630 is all the same.

To my knowledge, the only difference in the timing events between the two cams is that the intake opening timing is changed from 10 degrees BTDC to 10 degrees ATDC. Otherwise the timing events are the same. Odds are this was done to try to try to improve idle quality. Mike

Mike -- Data I have indicates that the intake valve opening was at 10� ADTC from A-410000-up, AR-250000-259999, and AO-1000-up. (PatB)

Pat, the John Deere service data that I have says something different. Perhaps Duane can chime in here and let us know for sure as the data I have came from Service Bulletins. Mike

Mike,
FSB 167 is the first FSB that gives spec info regarding valve timing - I have some sheets from what appears to be a Deere Service School with that info and they agree. For s/n 410000-583999
Intake opens 10 deg L (ATDC)
Intake closes 40 deg L (ABDC)
Exhaust opens 45 deg E (BBDC)
Exhaust closes 5 deg L (ATDC)
For s/n 584000-up
Intake opens 10 deg L(ATDC) Intake closes 40 deg L(ABDC)
Exhaust opens 45 deg E(BBDC)
Exhaust closes 5 deg E(BTDC)
I believe this FSB has an error for 584000-, and it should read
Intake opens 10 deg E (BTDC)
Exhaust closes 5 deg L (ATDC)
since scavenging was applied to valve operation, and it also then agrees with FSB 212

FSB 212 has the following info
Intake opens 10 deg BTDC
Intake closes 40 deg ABDC
Exhaust opens 45 deg BBDC
Exhaust closes 5 deg ATDC

However, as usual with discrepancies some more study should be done to sort things out and I'm not 100% sure I have the FSB info presented above sorted out correctly. I'm in the middle of preparation for my carb and mag seminars now, and don't have time to spend on it, but I've noted the problem and will get back to it.

Perhaps that's a question better asked on the Pulling Forum. There was little if any difference in the lift, duration, or lobe separation angles in two-cylinder camshafts over the years within each series of tractors, and it's not data that was ever published by Deere.

I"ve always wondered how the data got to the guys who regrind the two cylinder cams if it was never published by Deere.

Any ideas? There were times that I would like to hang a cam between machine centers and bolt a degree wheel to it and actually measure wear for myself.
