Just got a 1965 John Deere 3020 gas with wide front end. Everything seems to be working good and I'm getting ready to change out all the fluids etc. Don't have much experience with New Generation John Deeres so was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on areas that need special attention or care. The previous owner said the bushings in the hydraulic coupler were worn but did not need changing at this time. Hydraulics, steering, and brakes work fine so I assume the priority valve and pump is working fine but it does whine a wee bit. I was surprised with the power and torque for a 4 cylinder gas as most of my other tractors are diesels. Hoping to find a good 48 or 148 loader and combine the two.

Thanks guys...great advice. I was wondering about the oil dipstick check. I always try to get a technical manual, operators manual, parts manual and service manual for all my tractors. They may be expensive to purchase, but they become very inexpensive if they save you from a major repair or maintenance mistake. My 3020 is a 79xxx model and I notice a lot of SN breaks are at 68000. Thanks again.

Those hyd. pumps are normally noisy. If the coupler bushings are bad the're bad replace them before it chews up the alum. coupler. If/when you do this ? that will be the ideal time to also replace the fan belt too. Special attention for the tranny oil change is the filter and also the sump screen in the bottom of the tranny. I'm thinking there may be 2 spots for drain plugs ? May as well wait for your books to arrive as they should explain how to do it. Also depending on where you buy your filters some come with the seal packings for the cover and others don't so make sure you get them. They look like an o-ring but are square. Another thing check the oils with the dipsticks RESTING on the threads after you pull it out and wipe it off. If you check them screwed in it will be too low.

Just get yourself an Operator's Manual for it as soon as possible, it'll be the cheapest money you'll spend, and it will tell you many of the things you need to know about maintenance and service, many of which are different than two-cylinder tractors. I realize this are not inexpensive, but it will pay back its cost many times over.

Be sure the SN range on the manual matches the tractor's SN, else the manual will lead you astray on some details.

There were at least three different versions of the tractor and manuals.
